Chattel Mortgage: Overview and Benefits
A Chattel Mortgage is similar to a commercial loan, where you repay the loan in monthly installments. You can lower your monthly repayments by opting for a residual value or “Balloon” payment at the end of the loan term.
Benefits of a Chattel Mortgage:
  1. Tax Advantages:
    • If the equipment is used 100% for business purposes, you can claim the interest paid on the facility and the depreciation on the equipment as tax deductions.
  2. GST Benefits:
    • If your business is registered for GST, you may be eligible to claim some or all of the GST upfront, rather than spreading it over the term of the loan.
  3. Flexible Payments:
    • Deposits are optional and not generally required. You also have the option to purchase the equipment at any time during the agreement. Additionally, you can choose a balloon payment at the end of the term to reduce your monthly commitments.
